Students in Ross School’s Marine Science course spent a day exploring Shinnecock Bay in an effort to better understand estuaries. These transitional areas where rivers and oceans meet yield one of the most productive types of high-nutrient ecosystems. Led by members of Stony Brook University’s Southampton Marine Station, the students set out on the research vessel Peconic, a 45-foot catamaran, to examine the area’s rich biodiversity.
Over the course of their voyage, students examined living organisms and collected water quality data. These experiences provided them with a deeper understanding of local marine habitats as well as firsthand knowledge of the estuary’s critical role in providing food and shelter for wild animals and filtering the water upon which we rely.
