Cosmos Take to the Seas

Surf team 2015 Nothing captures the spirit of the East End lifestyle more than the beaches and bays of eastern Long Island. Located in the heart of the Hamptons, Ross School affords its students the unique opportunity to participate in three nautical sports teams: sailing, surfing, and rowing. All three sports are piquing interest from the students, with some international students even indicating that being able to participate in these sports influenced their decision to study at Ross.

Every afternoon, the docks of the Breakwater Yacht Club in Sag Harbor fill with eager student sailors from the local high schools, including eight Ross students. Under the direction of Breakwater’s Sailing Director Sean Elliot, sailors learn the intricacies of competitive racing. Thus far, the team has sailed in three regattas, and their final race will take place on June 7.

Just down the bay, rowers assemble for crew practice each afternoon. In the weeks leading up to spring, the team underwent extensive indoor training to get ready for competition. Rowers participate in a variety of individual and team regatta competitions throughout Long Island and New York. A handful of Ross rowers will also benefit from the training and conditioning as preparation for collegiate-level competition and possible university scholarships.

At Ocean Road Beach in Bridgehampton, surfers grab their boards and enthusiastically paddle out into the waves. Shane Dyckman, owner of Flying Point Surf School, reintroduced surfing to Ross’s athletic roster last spring, “giving local and international students an opportunity to take advantage of the East End’s natural resources.” Shane and his team of coaches emphasize the fundamentals of surfing and ocean safety with the students, and the sport’s popularity has exploded among both local and international students.

Sailing, rowing, and surfing are varsity sports in both the fall and spring athletic seasons. These nautical sports epitomize the East End experience—living a healthy and active outdoor lifestyle with access to some of the United States’ most celebrated beaches and waterways.
