On June 17, the grade 8 moving-up ceremony marked the students’ transition to high school. Special words from Head of Upper School Patty Lein expressed the community’s pride in their accomplishments and wished them well as they tackle new challenges ahead in September.

At the Lower School, Early Childhood students, family, and guests gathered in the Field House on the morning of June 18. After opening remarks by Jeanette Tyndall, head of Lower School, and a speech by LS Science teacher Bryan Smith, students in pre-nursery, nursery, and pre-kindergarten delighted the audience with songs including “Make New Friends,” “Thank You for Being a Friend,” and “Adios Amigos.” To signify the move up to the next grade, students passed through an arch of flowers.

Later in the day, a ceremony marked an end at the Lower School for sixth graders and the beginning of an exciting chapter for the class at the Upper School. The evening included remarks from Jeanette Tyndall; Junellen Tiska, LS director of curriculum; class speaker India Galesi-Grant; and Ellie Damiecki, sixth grader and LS Student Government president. This sixth grade class was the first to spend an extended time at the Lower School campus (as grades 5 and 6 were recently relocated there), and their leadership was acknowledged by all of their teachers. As another recognition of their individuality, teacher Deborah Minutello-Bartlett and Mandarin teacher Kera Shen presented scrolls beautifully personalized for each student with his or her name, the date, and traits that described the student. Kera commissioned the scrolls from a celebrated Taiwanese calligrapher, and the results were keepsakes that the class will treasure always. A video set to Pharrell Williams’s “Happy” featuring and edited by the sixth grade class, and closing comments from Jeanette, reminded all of the wonderful days the future class of 2020 spent at the Lower School and exciting times yet to come in the fall.

On June 19, in the Field House, a ceremony celebrated the moving up of grades kindergarten through grade 5. Jeanette welcomed everyone and then introduced keynote speaker Sam Hamilton ’14. Before passing through the symbolic arch, kindergarten, first, and second graders sang “Who Do We Appreciate?” Next, Jeanette recognized the support of the Parents Association and grade-level representatives, before the third, fourth, and fifth graders took over with a moving rendition of “Brave.” They, too, then passed through the arch.

Afterwards, Ellie Damiecki presented a beautiful bench as a gift from the sixth grade to the School. The bench was crafted by parent Bill Stewart, and it will be placed in the peace garden for all to enjoy.

All ceremonies were a joyful opportunity for family, friends, faculty, and staff to reflect on the terrific accomplishments of the students this past year.
