Exploring the Four Elements through Pottery

On April 24, students visited East End artist Mary Jaffe in her studio and worked with a variety of clay types derived from different geographic locations. Mary discussed how critical the elemental forces are in the process of creating, and each student worked independently on the wheel. By inviting students to engage in multi-sensory explorations, they learn to consider the interconnectedness of the four elements, which, in turn, teaches them about themselves. “Through place-based explorations of air, fire, water, and earth, students learn to consider the whole, not merely one part, of any question, decision, or investigation,” said kindergarten teacher Alison Aldredge.
