A Fishbowl View of Oceans and Seashores

Pre-kindergartners explored the coastline and gathered specimens for their saltwater tank during a field trip to Long Beach in Sag Harbor on September 19. The adventure launched the students’ first unit of the year, “Oceans and Seashores.” They learned about the various creatures that reside by the sea and the plants that can grow on the beach in a rocky terrain without soil.

Mining the shore, the students collected substrate for the bottom of their tanks. They also gathered slipper snails and different species of seaweed to serve as both food and protection from predators. A spider crab, fish and other sea life are also maintaining residence in the classroom tank. The class will be able to observe this unique ecosystem all year long.
